A national representative in netball, touch football and rugby league, Stanton began training on Monday with the ARU sevens program at Narrabeen in pursuit of her goal to wear the green and gold in Rio de Janeiro.
The 18-year-old former Hunter Sports High student was a member of the Indigenous Women's All Stars rugby league team that played the Australian Women's All Stars as a curtain-raiser to the Anzac Test at Allianz Stadium in May.
She was named in the Australian under-19 netball development squad in April after captaining NSW to fifth at the national championship in Melbourne, has just completed the Australian Netball League with NSW Blues and had been keen to join a trans-Tasman netball championship squad, but instead she has decided to try her hand at rugby sevens.
"My ultimate goal is to compete for Australia in the Olympics, of course. It's anyone's dream," Stanton said.
"I'm absolutely stoked to be joining the squad with all these talented athletes that are already here. I'm looking forward to trying something different and giving rugby sevens a crack."
Stanton's mother Nicole said the full-time contract with the ARU would cover the rest of this year, and in January she would sign a new 12-month deal.
The International Olympic Committee decided in 2009 to introduce rugby sevens to the 2016 Olympic program in Rio.
Australian women's sevens coach Tim Walsh has been monitoring Stanton's progress at national touch and rugby league tournaments and believes she has all the necessary skills.
"This is a classic case of an athlete who has excelled in another sport transferring her skill set in order to chase her Olympic dream," Walsh said.
"I have seen enough of Tanisha already to know she will be an asset to the squad."
Nominated for a Most Popular New Talent Logie award in February for her role hosting the NITV's Barefoot Sunday program, Stanton will continue working with the national indigenous television network.
