The win was the Knights' first against the Dragons in Newcastle since 2003.
More than 20,000 fans turned up for Old Boys Day, which celebrates the club's history with a parade of former players.
Newcastle came roaring out of the blocks and hit the front after five minutes.
Adam Cuthbertson waltzed through some weak Dragons defence before being tackled just metres from the try line.
On the next play Joey Leilua went over for the first try.
Jarrod Mullen crossed for Newcastle's second try on 12 minutes before Leilua left the field after being concussed in a tackle.
Knights legend Timana Tahu was his replacement, and the former Origin star had a chance to show off his trademark slam-dunk celebration as he quickly bagged the first of two tries in a fitting end to his Newcastle career.
Shortly after, half-back Tyrone Roberts and Dragons full-back Josh Dugan were given 10 in the sin bin following a scuffle.
The Knights took a 24-4 lead into half-time and they wasted little time in the second period, with Tahu crossing for his second try in the 43rd minute.
Newcastle's other try scorers were Dane Gagai and Sione Mata'utia.
The match marked the end of Newcastle's season and also the end of coach Wayne Bennett and prop Willie Mason's time with the club.
Fans chanted Mason's name after full-time in a touching display of gratitude.
