The mural, designed and painted by Newcastle Productions' Trevor Dickson, was officially opened on Monday, September 8.
The freshly painted tunnel is themed on an aquarium and features local landmarks including the old surf house and the Merewether baths.
Holy Family year 3 student Felix Mole regularly visited the site while it was being painted.
"I liked to see all the details of the underwater scene, especially the old baths blocks," Felix said.
The mural forms part of coastal upgrade works, which include new walk and cycle ways, viewing platforms, coastal vegetation, beach access and lighting.
Newcastle councillor Nuatali Nelmes attended the launch and praised community involvement in coastal revitalisation work.
"It has been a wonderful community collaboration. This mural is an artist's expression of this community building."
She also said that revitalisation work at Dixon Park beach should be completed in time for summer.
