A few months back The Lock-Up's board of trustees decided to explore new directions for the site.
After talks with the arts community, The Lock-Up relaunched itself as a multi-disciplinary contemporary arts space and inner city hub.
Director Jessi England Sideris said the board identified a gap in the Newcastle art scene.
The board has several commercial leases locked up in the Crown Land it manages on Hunter Street, guaranteeing an income and allowing the board freedom to explore the best cultural use of the building.
Ms England Sideris said The Lock-Up's focus would now be on site-specific installations, performances art, events, workshops and artist residencies.
The Lock-Up relaunched on Friday, September 5, with the exhibition Ash Island and its Transformations, featuring work by Nicola Hensel, Cherie Johnson, Emma van Leest and Shan Turner-Carroll.
■ The Lock-Up, 90 Hunter Street, Newcastle, is open 10am-4pm Wednesdays to Saturdays, and Sundays 11am-3pm.
