It was my pleasure on the weekend to help open and celebrate a new addition to our area’s community centres.
Through a partnership of Newcastle council and UrbanGrowth NSW, the Fletcher Community Centre has recently been completed and turned over to the council for management.
Part of the Sanctuary development, the centre is on Kurraka Drive, off Minmi Road in Fletcher.
EJE Architecture developed a fantastic design for this facility, and this month it was recognised with a 2014 Lower Hunter Urban Design Award.
The awards jury noted that the centre design “demonstrates sustainable building practices with community, environmental and social benefits”.
The council has issued a tender seeking expressions of interest for the facility’s management and intends to manage the centre in a way that achieves positive community-focused outcomes.
The emphasis here is truly on community – bringing people together to get to know one another and enjoy being neighbours.
We want this facility to offer and support programs and activities that service the local and broader community.
