Seven hundred men living in the Hunter are diagnosed with the disease each year and the Hunter Prostate Cancer Support Group wants to increase their survival rates.
The support group is run by prostate cancer survivors and passes on life advice to those suffering from the disease.
Established in 2002, the group meets at the Maryland multi-purpose centre on the second Tuesday of each month.
Support group secretary Gary Herrett said men who live in regional areas don't have the same access to adequate treatment as those living in the city.
"For example, if someone is to undergo radiation therapy they will need to travel to city centres every day for six to seven weeks and that's very tough."
A prostate cancer survivor, Mr Herrett said awareness was key to boosting survival rates.
"When I was diagnosed I realised how little I knew about the disease," he said.
The Hunter Prostate Cancer Support Group will host an education session this weekend to raise awareness of the disease and address the survival gap between regional and metropolitan NSW.
The free session will be held at Sinclairs Function Centre, 270 Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay, this Saturday, September 27, at noon. Host of experts will hold presentations about the disease and a light lunch will be provided.
