Off the back of a successful come-and-try day in June, as well as Cardiff's annual Chick Kick, interest from females is increasing, according to AFL NSW/ACT regional manager Simon Smyth.
"Cardiff have held their Chick Kick for a couple of years now and it has proven to be very popular with numbers increasing each year," Smyth said.
"We also had 18 players at our come and try day in June, so the interest is certainly there," Smyth said.
"Both the Central Coast and Newcastle hold youth girls competitions at under-18s and under-15s level respectively.
"Both competitions have been very successful and the introduction of the women's competition will create a pathway for these girls to continue to play AFL."
Smyth hopes the competition will consist of multiple teams from the Central Coast and Newcastle and envisages they will become part of existing Black Diamond AFL clubs.
"We believe that we can get a minimum of four sides, which will enable us to have a competition," he said.
"We understand that we may need to have an amount of flexibility around the structure and the Black Diamond AFL Board have indicated a willingness to accommodate this.
"We also believe that the inclusion of a women's side within an existing Black Diamond AFL club structure is the best model for all parties."
There are only three women's competitions in NSW: AFL Sydney, AFL Canberra and AFL Broken Hill.
There will be tryout events organised during the next few months to gauge interest.
