Despite Newcastle dominating possession throughout the match, they were largely toothless in attack and shaky in defence.
The trip across the ditch has traditionally been a bogey fixture for the Jets and this occasion proved no exception, with Wellington taking the lead through former Jet Nathan Burns after three minutes.
Newcastle enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half, but struggled to contain a wave of Wellington counter-attacks.
The Phoenix extended their lead when Burns was sent through on goal and bundled home a rebound in the shadows of half-time.
The pace of Burns and Michael McGlinchey continued to wreak havoc for the Phoenix after the break, with McGlinchey adding a third goal with a tap-in in the 64th minute.
Joel Griffiths pulled one back for Newcastle in the 90th minute before Wellington captain Andrew Durante headed home his side's fourth goal in injury time.
