A 1500-strong crowd filled Civic Park to send a message to the federal government opposing its asylum seeker policy.
Participants waved signs with the phrase "common people, common dreams".
Festivities continued late into the afternoon, with Ethiopian, Tibetan and Persian cuisines prepared for the crowds, as well as live entertainment.
