The Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Relay For Life team enters the annual Cancer Council event on behalf of Lorraine Adams.
Mrs Adams, 63, was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in May last year, and secondary liver cancer shortly afterwards.
Her daughter, Larissa Thomas, of Edgeworth, formed Lorraine's Angels to honour her mother's battle and raise funds for cancer research.
"I knew I couldn't cure Mum's cancer but I thought it was one way I could help," Mrs Thomas said. "It was one thing I could control."
This weekend, Mrs Thomas will take to the track at Glendale's Hunter Sports Centre with 40 of Mrs Adams' friends and family members for the 2014 Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Relay For Life.
Last year the team raised more than $20,000 for the Cancer Council, making it the top fund-raising team out of 122. This year they hope to raise $25,000.
The team has already raised more than $6000 through fund-raisers such as a trash and treasure stall, pie drives and a candle party.
Mrs Thomas has raised more than $2800, making her the second top individual fund-raiser this year so far.
To support the team go to relayforlife.org.au and search Lorraine's Angels.
You can donate online up to four weeks after the event.
