The Hunter Acute Injury Management Unit is a primary care clinic that aims to provide efficient, streamlined and comprehensive care to patients with acute non-life threatening injuries.

To save patients a long wait in the emergency department, the unit can treat soft tissue injuries, lacerations, fractures and dislocations, crush injuries and injuries to tendons, arteries and nerves on site at Newcastle Private Hospital, quickly and efficiently.

The unit was launched last Friday at Newcastle Museum and included an educational presentation on advancements in acute hand injury management.

Dr Ulrich Liedvogel, the director of the unit, was pleased with the success of the launch.

"The event went really well and was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the new Hunter Acute Injury Management Unit as well as to educate those in attendance about new and innovative patient treatment methods," he said.

Working alongside Dr Liedvogel are hand surgery specialists Dr Meads and Dr Myers, GPs Dr Marley and Dr Ballantyne, and general nurse and manager Meredith Ford.

The unit offers a unique collaborative service of procedural general practitioners, specialist hand and micro surgeons as well as specialist hand therapists.

People with hand injuries can attend the unit at Newcastle Private Hospital for acute treatment as well as follow-up care.

The unit offers X-ray, CT and ultrasound imaging, and pathology services on site.

It will be open from 8am until 5pm, Monday to Friday, and members of the public are able to visit without a GP referral.
