He started at the academy in January 1989.
Through his tireless efforts, he has been instrumental in assisting thousands of Hunter athletes achieve their potential in a large and varied array of sporting disciplines.
Mr Clifford was pivotal in the establishment of talent development programs, which encompass education sessions that cover skills such as public speaking, self-motivation and health combined with skills training sessions.
The programs played an important role in the personal and sporting development of many of the Hunter's youth over a long period of time.
In addition to the implementation of these programs, Mr Clifford has been a passionate promoter of involvement in sport and physical activity for people of all ages across the Hunter region.
He, with the support of NIB health fund, conducted a highly successful Festival of Sport in the July school holidays for more than 20 years.
Mr Clifford will be sorely missed by all those involved at the Hunter Academy of Sport.
The academy staff have wished Mr Clifford and wife Laraine all the best for a long and happy retirement.
The academy has not yet appointed a replacement chief executive officer.
