There are nine boys and 11 girls on Team Lake Macquarie’s two water polo squads.
Coaching the boys is Easts Water Polo Club under-16 boys’ manager Steven Wilson, while Jenny Hammond is at the helm with the girls.
Several players on the girls’ team are state and national Combined High Schools champions.
While each team has its strengths, both join forces to train for the Games each week at Speers Point Swim Centre.
They start with half an hour of low-intensity dry land training, which involves stretching, push-ups and bicep dips.
Things heat up in the water, where players spend 90 minutes in high-intensity training.
Mr Wilson said both teams were working extremely hard.
The Games will see four boys’ water polo teams go head to head, including Lake Macquarie.
They, like the girls, will play a round robin competition until a winner is crowned.
The boys will compete against two teams from Hungary and one from Los Angeles, while the girls will play Scone and Gosford.
