Don't wait for summer - spring has been summer this year.
I hope you have a garden abundant in tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and capsicum, as well as corn and eggplants.
The choices to plant for summer cropping are countless.
If your vegetable garden isn't big enough to grow all the delicious veggies available, pots and planters are ideal for such produce.
To give gardeners some ideas for containing growing we have planted out a section of the nursery with different summer crops using old pots.
Growing vegetables is family fun - kids love watching the seeds sprout, picking the tomatoes and watermelon.
Family involvement also encourages responsibility - the learning curve of regular watering, weeding and feeding, then seeing the results of their efforts.
Although the choice of tomatoes is quite extensive, including Apollo, Grosse Lisse, Roma, Mighty Red, and First Prize, the favoured tomatoes are Cherry and Sweet Bite because the small varieties aren't as prone to fruit fly.
The elimination of Rogor for use by the home gardener has presented huge problems for harvesting grub-free fruit.
David Grays Fruit Fly Garden Spray will help, but it is only a contact spray, meaning this pest will need to be hit by the product.
My method of dealing with fruit fly is to mix up a spreadable paste of Malathon and Vegemite and paint the stake supporting the tomato - the female fly is attracted to the Vegemite, eats it and the Malathon kills her.
Organic gardening has become increasingly popular, but it should be noted that products such as Eco-oil don't treat fruit fly - it will only eliminate two spotted mites and aphids.
Fruit fly traps such as Searles and CeraTrap give excellent results trapping many of these pests, but please remember to dispose of rotting fruit.
Now to lettuce - which one to grow. If a decision is difficult, try the lettuce combos where each punnet has at least four varieties - try the mini cos mix, add pak choi and rocket, then you will have the ultimate salad greens.
