Some women in developing countries are less fortunate.

One local non-profit organisation is working to change that.

Days For Girls Australia distributes reusable feminine hygiene kits to developing countries.

The kits include two cotton shields that clip together around underwear and eight washable liners made from flannelette material.

Last year the organisation distributed about 2000 kits to 30 countries.

Behind it all is Newcastle woman Gloria Buttsworth.

Her journey started two years ago with a visit to her friend Lois Ford, who runs an orphanage in Uganda.

Mrs Buttsworth said 103 girls lived there and not one had access to sanitary products.

"Those poor girls use anything they can find - old clothes, newspaper, mattress stuffing."

Mrs Buttsworth wanted to help.

She discovered US-born organisation Days For Girls International and started a local branch.

Last week the Country Women's Association NSW Belmont branch donated about 100 hygiene kits that its members had sewn.

Mrs Buttsworth said their help was invaluable.
