LAKE Macquarie snagged eight medals at the 2014 International Children’s Games - four gold, two silver and two bronze.
About 1500 athletes descended on the city to contest the Games, which were held in the southern hemisphere for the first time.
Team Lake Macquarie consisted of 70 of the city’s best athletes, gymnasts, swimmers, golfers, sailors, footballers, water polo players and BMX riders.
In athletics, Dakota Thomas won the girls’ 100-metre sprint and helped Emma-Sue Greentree, Bernice de Jager and Teah Macpherson win the girls’ 4 x 100m relay.
One of the city’s bronze medals was also picked up on the track by Emma-Sue Greentree in the girls’ high jump.
Golfers Jye Pickin and Piper Prince won gold for Lake Macquarie for the first time since Jake Higginbottom’s podium finish at the 2008 San Francisco Games.
The girls’ water polo team, consisting of Gabby Hooper, Gabrielle Maddison, Georgia May Hammond, Grace Whipp, Jade Casey Hill, Jolie Marsden, Jorja Rocteur, Lucy Coom, Marlee Rae Hammond, Mikayla Kirchener, Shanae Kirchener and Abbey Cartwright took silver in the finals against Sopron, Hungary.
Kimberly Alsop won the city’s second bronze medal in the girls’ BMX time trial.
Her teammate Georgia Beckers won silver in the girls’ BMX final.
These results helped Lake Macquarie to sixth overall out of the 78 cities that competed in the Games.
Newcastle bagged one bronze medal in athletics for the girls’ shot put thanks to Stephanie Scigala.
Taipei, Taiwan won the Games, with a whopping 10 gold, 16 silver and three bronze medals.
Seoul, South Korea finished second with 10 gold, two silver and one bronze, while New Taipei City, Taiwan, trailed in third with seven gold, five silver and four bronze.
