Earlier this year, police reported at least one crash a day was happening at the notorious intersection.
However, any change to prevent this will not be made until next year.
Lake Macquarie council voted on last Monday night to defer the matter until February, when the Traffic Facilities and Road Safety Committee had investigated the impact of banning the right-hand turn on surrounding roads - namely Minmi, Link, Oakville and Main.
Although councillors voted unanimously, councillor Rob Denton wanted his uneasiness noted.
‘‘I’m flagging how uncomfortable I’m going to be as a councillor to vote to ban right-hand turns, unless someone can bring cold hard crash statistics to the table,’’ he said.
Construction of a roundabout is expected to start in May - at which point the right-hand turn ban would be obsolete.
The announcement of the roundabout was a big win for the Cameron Park community, which had lobbied for one for some time.
It was supposed to be built when Northlakes Estate reached 1500 lots.
That was a few years ago.
Now, the council has bumped up the roundabout’s priority.
Before construction starts, Coal & Allied must move power poles and other infrastructure onto private land.
Cr Denton said it was more important for the council to put pressure on the mining company to do the work so the roundabout could be built on time, than to ban the right-hand turn.
‘‘Building the roundabout is the solution, not banning the right-hand turn,’’ he said.
‘‘Why is it the case that we always build these big housing estates and forget about the infrastructure around it?’’
