Labor has endorsed 22-year-old Declan Clausen as their candidate.
Mr Clausen successfully ran Ms Nelmes' lord mayor by-election campaign in November.
He was also named Newcastle's Young Citizen of the Year in 2013.
The Greens have preselected North Lambton social worker Nevenka Bareham as their candidate.
Ms Bareham has previously run as a second or third candidate on The Greens ticket.
Kath Elliott, an independent from Hamilton, has also thrown her hat in.
She previously headed up the Newcastle Alliance and was the CEO of the Hunter Area Consultative Committee.
Independents Arjay Martin, who stood in the 2014 state Charlestown state byelection, and New Lambton father-of-three Allan Warren will also contest the election.
The Ward 3 election will be held on February 21.
The ward includes the suburbs of Georgetown, Jesmond, Kotara, Lambton, New Lambton, New Lambton Heights, North Lambton, Waratah and Waratah West.
