That is what 90 people - 76 adults and 14 children - did on Monday morning at Lake Macquarie City Council chambers.
They represented 29 countries, from the United Kingdom to India to Germany.
Among them was Andrew Trivers, of Cameron Park.
Mr Trivers moved to Australia from Scotland when he was nine.
On Monday, after 45 years, he finally took the leap and became a permanent citizen.
His wife Leanne watched from the gallery.
"I'm very proud that he's taken this step," she said.
As for Mr Trivers, he said he felt "no different" after the ceremony and was proud to be Australian.
Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison welcomed Mr Trivers and the remainder of the country's newest citizens alongside her fellow councillors and other officials.
"I'm really pleased to see so many citizenship candidates here today," Cr Harrison said.
"I congratulate each and every one of you on choosing to become part of the wider Australian family."
