Hundreds filled the Concert Hall in Newcastle City Hall to watch the presentation of the Australian Citizenship certificates and the announcement of the Newcastle Australia Day Awards.
Special guest Kamahl entertained the crowd with a speech and a song, while The University of Newcastle's chamber choir Echology performed Waltzing Matilda and Moreton Bay.
Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said she was proud to welcome the new citizens and hoped they appreciated the freedoms that came with being an Australian.
She also paid tribute to the Awabakal and Worimi peoples.
