Fearnley was heralded for his inspirational achievements, and bringing credit and recognition to Newcastle at a ceremony at Newcastle City Hall on Monday.
He has won marathons all over the world, including London, New York and Chicago.
Fearnley was also thanked for helping out a number of charity functions. He was absent from the ceremony as he was competing in Sydney but gave a thank-you speech via a pre-recorded video message.
Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Kirk Upton.
Mr Upton was recognised for his contribution to the awareness and promotion of physical and mental health in the Newcastle community.
He works with a variety of groups at the University of Newcastle and has been instrumental in securing funding to help more students access support.
Community Group of the Year was awarded to the Fort Scratchley Historical Society.
Volunteers at the Fort Scratchley Historical Society have managed the day-to-day operations of Fort Scratchley for more than 20 years.
The society includes more than 80 active members who donate about 40,000 hours of their time each year.
