THE Socceroos are off to the AFC Asian Cup 2015 finals after the team quashed United Arab Emirate’s campaign.
Australia won 2-0 in front of a sell-out home crowd at Hunter Stadium on Tuesday night.
Novices Trent Sainsbury and Jason Davidson scored their first international goals.
Asian Cup three-time goal scorer Tim Cahill’s presence attracted three UAE defenders to him, leaving Sainsbury unattended to place a neat header in the net.
Eleven minutes later Davidson scored the second goal.
The Socceroos will now face-off with Korea Republic in Sydney this Saturday, January 31 to decide who takes the silverware.
Australia made it to the finals four years ago but lost 0-1 to reigning Cup holders Japan.
Japan was knocked out of contention this year after UAE edged them out in the quarter-finals.
The third and fourth place play-off match between semi-final losers UAE and Iraq will be held this Friday, January 30 at Hunter Stadium – the last local match of the tournament.
