The 25-year-old, who was runner-up to world champion Joel Parkinson in 2009, dedicated his ride to fallen friend and fellow Brazilian surfer Ricardo Dos Santos.
Dos Santos was scheduled to compete but died a month ago after he was shot three times by an off-duty policeman close to his home in Brazil.
On his board Muniz wrote ‘‘Ricardinho Para Sempre’’, which translates to ‘‘Ricardinho forever’’.
Muniz said he knew Dos Santos was looking down and helping him on Sunday when he defeated Australian two-time junior world champion Jack Freestone by 5.07 points in the final.
Palm Beach’s Ellie Brooks was crowned the 2015 Burton Automotive Women’s Classic champion.
The 18-year-old blocked a close comeback for 2009 champion Phillipa Anderson. The pair finished equal on a two-wave total of 12.66 points.
Brooks had the highest individual wave score of 7.83, which won her the title. The one-star world qualifying series contest was only the fifth senior event for Brooks.
‘‘This is by far my best result,’’ Brooks said.
The Burton Automotive High School Teams Challenge wrapped up on Friday at South Bar Beach.
Northern Beaches Secondary College took out the boys’ division, with Swansea High School trailing in second.
Narrabeen Sports High School finished first in the girls’ division, with Kotara High School narrowly missing out on a spot in the top three in fourth place.
