The council recently prepared a draft Local Planning Strategy (LPS) to guide the city's growth and development to 2030 and beyond.
The draft strategy considers a number of issues for the future city.
For example, the city should have jobs close to where people live and have convenient, sustainable options for travelling to work.
The council must also maintain high quality areas for recreation and protect the environment and heritage places.
These are high aims but they are achievable.
The draft LPS shows how the council can provide the right housing. It shows how the council can set up a plan for commercial centres to easily access goods, services and jobs where residents live.
It shows how to plan growth. The strategy provides the land use planning platform for a smarter, more liveable Newcastle.
The draft LPS is on public exhibition until April 27. View the draft online, at libraries or pick up a copy at council offices, 282 King Street.
