In recent times, the competition in many rural areas has struggled to find entrants.
Demonstrating the strength of the local community, 12 impressive young women are competing in the competition, making it the largest number of entrants Newcastle has had in many years.
The entrants are Abbi-Lee Chambers of Mount Hutton, Alexis Adams of Loxford, Chelsea-Anne Lewis of Jilliby, Elyse Hudson of Charlestown, Emily Steel-Ryan of Rankin Park, Grace Fowles of Callaghan, Jennifer Dora of Eleebana, Khiarni Williams of Brandy Hill, Rachelle Zacharczuk of Hamilton, Rebecca Gattera of Cooranbong, Rhiannon Hopkins of Cooranbong, and Steffany Sneesby of Elermore Vale.
Initial judging was held on Wednesday, February 25, with the judging panel commenting on what a difficult task they have to choose one young woman to be the show's ambassador, with such a high standard of entries.
The final judging will take place on-stage at the show on Friday, March 6, in the Exhibition Centre at 7.30pm.
The People's Choice Showgirl will be announced on Sunday, March 8, following a "like" competition on the Newcastle Showgirl Facebook page, where the public can vote for their favourite entrant.
