A SEA of purple filled Mayfield's Hunter Women's Centre on Thursday for early International Women's Day celebrations.
More than 80 women and young girls came together to commemorate the day - a worldwide movement held every year on March 8 to recognise women's struggles and triumphs.
There were three guest speakers, all of whom focused on domestic abuse.
One woman spoke of how she had overcome physical, emotional and sexual abuse; another of homelessness and substance abuse and another of child sexual assault.
A body percussion session and afternoon tea followed.
The event was hosted by specialist homelessness service Nova For Women and Children in conjunction with Family Support Newcastle and Ability Links.
