Two first-half goals from Enver Alivodic and Ki-Je Lee saw Newcastle snap a horror run of form with a 2-1 win at Western Sydney.
Newcastle were helped by Wanderers coach Tony Popovic, who decided to play an inexperienced side.
The win was the club’s first in 10 matches and it sees the Jets move off the bottom of the table at the expense of the Wanderers.
The Jets hit the front in the 21st minute when Wanderers ‘keeper Ante Covic rushed off his line but was beaten to the ball by Alivodic.
The Serbian rounded the keeper before curling the ball past three defenders and into the top corner.
The big talking point of the match came in the 32nd minute when the Jets had seemingly doubled their lead.
Edson Montano tapped home after being found by a Andrew Hoole cross via a deflection off a Wanderers player.
Montano was inexplicably ruled offside by assistant referee Sarah Ho.
The decision prompted a vocal reaction from coach Phil Stubbins and was labelled the "worst decision of the season" by Fox Sports pundits.
Luckily for Newcastle they did score again in the 45th minute when Lee scored his second goal of the season.
Hoole was again involved, playing the Korean in on the left hand side of the box.
Lee took one touch before smashing the ball past Covic at the near post from a tight angle.
The Wanderers did hit back five minutes after half-time through a Nick Kalmar free-kick, but Newcastle hung tough to claim a confidence boosting three points.
■ The Jets play Adelaide United this Sunday, March 29, Hunter Stadium, 5pm.
