In previous years the wooden-hulled ferry was used for the blessing of the fleet as it cruised into Toronto foreshore for the annual Easter weekend event.
However, last year Protex was absent as it was under repair.
Protex will return this year alongside fleet ships Tom Thumb, Nell and Folding Boat.
Patrons can climb aboard Protex and motor around the lake for a gold coin donation.
Originally named Waikara, a New Zealand Maori name for 'smooth water', it is believed Protex may have started its journey across the ditch, but exactly what the first 20 years of its life entailed is unknown.
Protex joined the Sydney Heritage Fleet in 1981 after servicing Balmain harbour and the Hawkesbury River for many years.
It once sank off the Balmain coast in 1952 but was salvaged and restored.
The vessel is used regularly and carries 20 people.
Lake Macquarie Classic Boat Association president Peter Johnston said having boats like Protex on display was a huge benefit to the event and the community.
"These ships are our heritage; they are where we came from. We only ever got [to Australia] by ship. The advantage of having these ships up here is to create an awareness as to what the classic boatfest is all about."
All the usual attractions will return to Boatfest in 2015, including classic boats, vintage vehicles , the Quick 'n' Dirty boat-building competition and the Easter egg hunt.
