The Knights climbed to the top of the ladder on Saturday after a stellar 26-14 win over Penrith at Hunter Stadium.
It was the Knights' fourth win from as many games this season, putting them in the lead ahead of premiership favourites Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Thirteen years have passed since the Knights last opened a season with four consecutive wins.
It is a vast improvement on last season, when they lost momentum halfway through the season and finished in 12th place.
On Saturday, the team scored three tries to lead the Panthers 18-4 at half-time.
At full-time, Newcastle had racked up four tries (Chris Houston, Adam Clydsdale, Kurt Gidley and Akuila Uate) and five goals by Tyrone Roberts to close the game down and leave the Panthers bitterly disappointed.
More than 20,000 people turned out to the match in hi-vis gear to support NSW Mining.
The Knights will host the 11th-placed St George-Illawarra Dragons this Saturday at Hunter Stadium.
Newcastle is favoured to win the match, which kicks off at 7.30pm.
