Next week McKay will take on the state's best in kart racing when he competes in the first round of the NSW Kart Championship.
Held in Griffith from April 17 to 19, the first leg will see hundreds of racers vie for points towards their overall tallies across 12 classes.
McKay competes in the unrestricted 35 horsepower karts, which can reach speeds of up to 120km/h.
The 26-year-old joins about 10 other Novocastrians in junior and senior divisions.
Round two is in Dubbo (June 19 to 21) and the third and final round in Lithgow (August 7 to 9).
McKay boasts an impressive track record at state competitions, but is yet to clinch a title in only his second year competing at this level.
At the last state meet in Grenfell, west of Bathurst, he finished inside the top 10.
At the TaG Super Series in Newcastle in March, he placed in the top five and most recently at his home Newcastle Kart Racing Club in Cameron Park, he finished fourth.
The top seven karts were split by just 0.1 of a second.
After the 2015 state championship wraps up, McKay will enter a round in the Australian Kart Championship.
It will be held from September 4 to 6 in Newcastle, giving McKay a home ground advantage.
But McKay said his focus will be on the state championship.
"I've really been trying to nudge my way into the top pack, and it seems to be working," he said.
"I want to capitalise on that before I go further."
