For a year local green thumbs have gathered at Wallsend Community Garden every fourth Sunday morning, next to Stockland Wallsend Shopping Centre.
Stockland donated the land for community use, handing the site's management over to Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre.
Blue Gum Hills Men's Shed helped construct the garden beds, which are now blossoming full of herbs, fruit and vegetable plants.
Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre manager Bridget Noonan said about half a dozen people helped out with the garden each month.
Ms Noonan said the garden was a win-win for the community, with the gardeners making full use of the flood-prone land while engaging in social activities.
The gardeners are on the hunt for more working bees to join their group, as some of the original helpers had moved away.
"We get a real mix of people that come here - some younger families with kids and some older people as well," Ms Noonan said.
Anyone who helps out can take home fresh produce from the grounds, she said.
