Tom Grimes and Tom Crockett are three years apart, attend different high schools and live in different suburbs, but there is one thing they share aside from their first names: a dream to compete in the 2015 Youth Sailing World Championship.
Their crowning last week as NSW CHS champions landed them one step closer to that dream.
Grimes, 16, of Belmont, and Crockett, 13, of Redhead, have both been members of Belmont 16ft Sailing Club since they were six years old.
Yet before last week's championship they had only sailed together three times during training.
The pair decided to team up to see how well they performed under pressure.
With several notable accolades between them, it was bound to pay off.
In 2013, Grimes finished second at the Australian titles in the Flying 11s class, and first at the state titles the same year.
In January, Crockett won the national titles in Brisbane in Flying 11s.
A month later he placed second at the state championship (held after nationals) in Sydney.
Both sailors won last season's club championship in their respective classes - Crockett in Flying 11s and Grimes in 29ers.
So when the pair hopped into their 29er boat Oliver last week for the five-day regatta in Belmont, it was magic waiting to happen.
Grimes and Crockett faced off against more than 120 boats with two, three and four sailors in each.
Skipper Crockett called the team's decisions, while crew member Grimes executed them.
Grimes said sailing required wits.
"You need to be switched on and know what's happening around you," he said.
"There are a lot of things to consider, for example the weather, what's going on inside your boat, what other boats are doing around you, and your strategy."
Whatever their strategy was, it paid off - the pair won by 2½ points.
Second place went to Scots College's John Cooley and Simon Hoffman, while Trinity Grammar School's Jerome Watts, Matthew Doyle and Lachlan Johnson finished third.
Grimes and Crockett will now shift their focus to the Youth Sailing World Championship in Langkawi, Malaysia, from December 27 to January 3.
Entry is open to any sailor under 19, but competition is fierce, with only one boat accepted per country.
