But the idealistic tag line, with which World War I was infamously branded, fell flat on its face.
Since the war between key European power blocs ended in 1918, there have been countless more conflicts, including World War II, the Vietnam War and Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Hundreds of thousands of Australian soldiers have fought in these conflicts.
That is what Toronto RSL sub-branch president Ron Mitcherson, who is a Vietnam War veteran, wants people to remember on Anzac Day.
"Respect what's been done for Australia over many, many years," he said.
"A lot of men and women have fought for this country to make it what it is today."
Mr Mitcherson said the RSL sub-branch committee had organised a free community event in conjunction with Lake Macquarie City Council to commemorate the Anzac centenary at Speers Point Park this Sunday, April 19.
Ex-servicemen, school students, community groups and historical organisations have all played a part in the event's organisation.
It will open at 10am with a flag-raising ceremony by the park's heritage shed.
A multimedia presentation from the Australian War Memorial; aerial, military vehicle and medal displays; live entertainment and interactive children's activities will all be on offer.
The $79,000 event was funded by the federal government's Anzac Centenary Local Grants program.
