Newcastle schools Anzac service back
THIS year's Newcastle Combined Schools Anzac Service will go ahead after 18 months of uncertainty.
The 60th service was due to be held last year but was cancelled.
Newcastle council pulled its in-kind support of about $5300 to host the service at the Civic Theatre in January last year.
The council was heavily criticised for pulling back its services to match other councils.
Although local businesses rallied to support the Anzac service financially in February, Newcastle District Council of RSL Sub-Branches said it was too late to run the service under short notice.
About 1200 children attend the service each year.
It is designed to give them a greater understanding of the meaning of Anzac Day and the sacrifices made by Australian men and women in defending our country.
This year, the service is being organised by a sub-committee that includes six year 11 and two year 12 students representing Newcastle's state, Catholic and independent schools communities.
The Newcastle Permanent will sponsor the event for the 12th year.
Newcastle Permanent Building Society acting CEO Andrew Yost said he was pleased the society's partnership helped the younger generations remember the sacrifices made.
"This is an important local tradition and a great educational initiative that teaches students about the heritage of our Anzacs while providing opportunities for research, development and production of the annual service," he said.
