Newcastle's running community will band together again this weekend to help the young Reeves family, which has experienced a traumatic two years.
In 2013, primary school teacher Hayley Reeves was diagnosed with an advanced tumour in her right breast.
After extensive chemotherapy treatment, her breast was removed followed by radiation treatment.
Then Hayley's two-year-old daughter, Jade, started to develop difficulties talking and walking.
Doctors discovered a cancerous tumour that covered more than half of the right side of her brain.
She underwent brain surgery just before her third birthday but the doctors were unable to remove the whole tumour.
Jade now has a shunt to release fluid and pressure on her brain and has been through extensive chemotherapy.
During this time Hayley was scheduled to have her left breast removed.
While in recovery, Jade experienced seizures and more surgery was needed.
To help out with the ongoing medical costs and a loss of income, Planet Fitness will host the third annual A Run With A Story fundraiser.
Organiser Cory Newman said she was overwhelmed by nominations from the community for a beneficiary for this year's Run With A Story.
Once again the gym will hold 5-kilometre, 10km, 15km, 30km and 60km races, starting at Planet Fitness Belmont.
■ Run With A Story is on this Sunday, May 3. To enter, go to planetfitness.com.au/gym/lambton.
