The theme for this year’s Service is “They Served - WWI Australian Army Nurses from the Hunter”.
It is based on research by local historian, Christine Bramble, as documented in her book Sisters of the Valley – First World War Nurses from Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
More than 1,400 students from Newcastle’s schools will attend the service, which will focus on why we commemorate Anzac Day and highlight Australia’s identity and military heritage.
A presentation will be delivered by an eight-student sub-committee, combined with drama classes from Lambton High School, which have been working together to develop the script.
The service is supported by the Department of Education and Communities Newcastle, Catholic Schools Office Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, Newcastle Grammar School, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Newcastle District Council of RSL Sub-branches and The City of Newcastle.
Newcastle Permanent Building Society is the principal corporate sponsor for the event and it is financially underwritten by Merewether-Hamilton RSL Sub-branch.
