The Macquarie Hills family has decided to be part of the inaugural Mother's Day Classic in Newcastle this Sunday, May 10.
Michelle Russell, her husband Brad, and children, Zoe, 7, and Zac, 5, have signed up for the four-kilometre walk at Newcastle foreshore.
She hopes to be joined by her mother-in-law, sister and her children.
"We will do the walk and go to brunch - it will be a nice way to start the day," Mrs Russell said.
She is happy to support the classic, which helps fund the National Breast Cancer Foundation and its research projects into detection, prevention and treatment of breast cancer as well improve survivors' lives.
These projects are close to Mrs Russell's heart as she is a breast cancer survivor.
Mrs Russell first noticed a lump on Valentine's Day 2013.
Within a week and after a mammogram and ultrasound, she was told "you have breast cancer".
"You don't think of women in their 30s getting breast cancer," Mrs Russell said.
During six rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and 18 cycles of targeted drugs, she discovered there were other women of her age and younger.
After 18 months of treatment, Mrs Russell was given "a second chance".
"This year's goal is to get my fitness back after the treatment," she said.
"One of the things to prevent any cancer coming back is exercise, at least half an hour a day."
The classic is part of this fitness regime that will also include a two-day 60-kilometre charity walk in November, The Weekend to End Women's Cancers.
"It's an emotional roller-coaster going to breast cancer events, so I select the ones that support the research side and finding a cure," Mrs Russell said.
Registrations for the classic are available online until midnight tonight, May 6, or on the day. Go to mothersdayclassic.com.au.
