The service was due to be held on April 22 but was postponed after most of Newcastle was shut down due to cyclonic storms.
Fallen trees and power lines closed down many of the city’s main roads, making it near impossible for many students to attend.
At the service, Lambton High School drama students paid tribute to local service men and women through the production They Served.
The year 11 drama students, along with year 9 and 10 accelerated students, told of the story of Australian Army nurses who served in hospitals and casualty clearing stations during World War I.
They Served is based on the book Sisters of the Valley - First World War Nurses from Newcastle and the Valley by Christine Bramble.
The service was organised by a sub-committee that included six year 11 and two year 12 students representing Newcastle’s state, Catholic and independent schools.
Merewether-Hamilton RSL Sub Branch hosted the event, securing funding through the Newcastle Permanent Building Society as the major sponsor.
