At Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday the North Stars lost 3-2 against Perth Thunder but returned Sunday night to win 8-3 against Sydney Bears.
“This weekend was our best weekend so far,” Petrie said.
“Not results-wise but certainly in how we played.
“We had a great game Sunday night. We just came up on the short end of a very tight scoreline.”
Saturday’s game was a tense top-of-the-board clash between the Thunder and North Stars.
Despite dominating the scoring in the first two periods the North Stars were unable to hold the Thunder out in period three.
Sunday night the North Stars dominated the entire game, scoring eight goals from 53 shots compared to the Bears’ three goals from 20 shots.
The North Stars led 2-0 at the end of the first period and led 4-0 until the Bears were able to slip a goal past Newcastle goaltender Dayne Davis with just two seconds left in the second period.
The Bears looked like they would rally to the cause in period three, taking the score to 5-3.
However, a last-ditch run at claiming the wins was not to be for the Bears with three more quick goals coming from the North Stars in the final seven minute of the game to end it 8-3.
Petrie said Sunday night’s performance against the Bears was what he had been looking for since the start of the league season.
“I think we’re at a point now where we’re starting to click and we’ve got the style of play we want to play down,” he said.
The North Stars next face Canberra Brave at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday, May 24.
