A close first quarter was played, with both teams strongly contesting the ball in all positions, leading to multiple turnovers.
Circle movement was clean and open with South’s attacks, although through their determination the Maryville Tavern’s defence at times created good pressure.
With the half-time score in South’s favour at 22-14, the fast pace was sustained and both teams continued to challenge each other with great energy.
Maryville Tavern brought back their strong defensive pressure within the last quarter, but South’s remained ahead and further lengthened their lead, ending the game 51-29.
Despite falling behind, the Maryville Tavern’s attacks persistence displayed skilful feeding into their circle against South’s compelling defence.
In other matches, Junction Hotel Stella came up short against Forsythes Business Advisors 24-64, and another highly demanding game saw Bilbie Dan Solicitors defeat Junction Hotel Yoga Loft 54-35.
The top two positions on the ladder are yet to budge, with the undefeated South Leagues Netball Club and Forsythes Business Advisors on 21 points.
The next Greater Open Championship matches will be played May 30 on courts 8 and 9 in National Park at 2.30pm and 3.45pm.
