He admits to being quite ambivalent to the national day until he was immersed in it.

Biggins, born and schooled in Newcastle, said the commitment, passion and national pride of the committee, let alone the day itself, was quite inspiring and at times funny.

In Australia Day these elements are blended with the political intrigue of local councils.

The modern comedy is set in the country town of Coriole where a six-person committee (played by Geoff Kelso, David James, Sharon Davis, Dennis Coard, Robyn Arthur and Kenneth Moraleda) is gearing up to celebrate the national day with a big bash.

However, each one, from the mayor to the Greens and Country Women's Association's representatives, wants something different.

Although Biggins wrote Australia Day two years ago and it has been performed by several companies, this is the first time he has directed the work.

Biggins said he had enjoyed editing the play for a national five-month regional tour.

"It's been good to rework it and hone it."

He said he was looking forward to Australia Day playing in his home town.

Biggins believes there will be an immediate identification with the people on the stage.

"A recognition of the foibles, weaknesses yet innate decency of the Australian character."

He said it would be fun and good entertainment as well as thought-provoking with its commentary on Australia, its politics and social issues.

Biggins will have a first-hand experience of Novocastrians' reactions when he attends the Saturday night performance at the Civic Theatre.
