Budding young scientist Sara Lunn, a year 6 student at Pelican Flat Public School, has the answer.
Using sugar, water and food colouring to make her own rock candy, Sara discovered the sweet treat was best enjoyed at room temperature.
Over several days, she found the sugar crystals solidified to the perfect consistency at room temperature, but went too hard in the fridge.
The experiment was for the school’s annual science fair, which was held on Wednesday.
Sara and her 45 school mates from year 1 to 6 presented their homemade projects, which ranged from exploding volcanos and dry ice to quicksand and rockets.
The fair was the culmination of a term’s worth of work on the scientific method.
Students were given several weeks to conjure up a creation and perfect their methods before giving a brief presentation to teachers, parents and classmates at the fair.
Pelican Flat Public School principal Louise Dunn said the aim was to encourage students to ‘‘have a go’’.
Mrs Dunn said she was thoroughly pleased with the quality of the projects.
