In a double-header weekend, the North Stars celebrated 4-2 win against second-placed Perth Thunder at Perth Ice Arena on Saturday, followed by a 4-3 loss on Sunday.
Saturday saw the North Stars start slow, then steamroll home to secure the match in the second and third periods.
“The team was able to turn things around after being dominated for the first eight or nine minutes of the game,” said North Stars coach Andrew Petrie.
“They were able to regroup and switch the tables.”
Perth Thunder turned up undeterred on Sunday night and the teams were neck-and-neck in the first and second periods until the Thunder took the lead in period three.
“The Thunder played really well in defeat last night and they played really well tonight and got the win,” Petrie said.
Petrie could not fault his players.
“There is no questioning their effort,” he said.
“All you can ask is that the boys follow the game plan and give their all and they did both of those things.”
Geordie Wudrick and Luke Moffatt continued their stellar style, scoring five of seven goals with Matt Lindsay and Beau Taylor also contributing one each to the weekend tally.
Scott Swiston played strongly and “made his presence felt”, according to Petrie.
But it was the defencemen Starke, Safar, Lindsay and Ferrari that Petrie was particularly impressed with.
“We ran with four defencemen all weekend for back-to-back games and they did a phenomenal job.
‘‘And our goaltending was outstanding.’’
The North Stars play Melbourne Mustangs at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday, July 11.
