The first design revealed in July 2014 was heavily criticised by the public for looking like an oversized tin shed and lacking the infrastructure needed for people to be able to swap between different modes of transport.
Mr Baird said the new design was an improvement on the first lot of plans, with included open and retail space.
He said the Wickham transport interchange was a key part of the NSW government’s plan to revitalise Newcastle.
“The state-of-the-art transport interchange will allow for the future development of Newcastle Light Rail that will help to reconnect the city with the foreshore,” he said.
Mr Baird said further feedback would be sought from residents, businesses and Newcastle council in the coming weeks to finalise the interchange design, including urban design elements, landscaping and public art.
The Wickham transport interchange is expected to open mid-2017.
