South Sydney slaughtered Newcastle 52-6 at ANZ Stadium.
The loss diminished any hope the Knights had of distancing themselves from the wooden spoon after a redeeming 30-2 win against the Gold Coast Titans a week earlier.
Knights coach Rick Stone said he was ‘‘shell-shocked’’ after Saturday’s loss.
‘‘I’m embarrassed to be honest,’’ he said.
The Knights started strong with prop Kade Snowden scoring the opening try.
However, their luck ended there as the Rabbitohs fought back hard with 36 points in 34 minutes.
A hat-trick from Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis was just three of seven tries scored in the first half by South Sydney.
The reigning NRL Telstra Premiership champions continued the onslaught in the second half to run out 46-point winners.
Their win was highlighted by a further hat-trick to Dylan Walker and a double to winger Alex Johnston.
The Knights will play the St George Illawarra Dragons this Sunday, August 2, at Jubilee Oval.
