TomorrowMakers, an event hosted by Lake Macquarie council at Charlestown community centre The Place, saw 18-to-25-year-olds share their innovative ideas for the city's future with prominent industry futurists.
Participants had the chance to interact with new technologies such as 3D printing and virtual reality.
The event was an important part of the council's community consultation on how Lake Macquarie can become a 'Smart City' through the use of technology.
Ideas and suggestions received on the night will be used to prepare the city's first Digital Economy Strategy.
Urban planner and community engagement specialist John O'Callaghan said only a handful of councils across Australia have adopted a strategy of this kind.
Lake Macquarie council is calling on ideas for the strategy until Friday, July 31.
The most innovative and achievable idea will win an Apple Watch Sport.
