While most people are aware of the core services provided by councils - road maintenance, development assessment and waste collection - local government is now a multiservice provider, meeting individual community expectations and needs.
From childcare, pet registration, swimming facilities and classes, and extensive local library services, Lake Macquarie families use council services on a daily basis.
Did you know that more than 19,000 people and more than 130 clubs participate in sports in Lake Macquarie, and that the council is the major provider of sports facilities in the city?
The council also supports more than 15 Sustainable Neighbourhood groups to plan and make changes to protect the natural environment.
Library members borrowed more than one million items last year; beach lifeguards performed 103 rescues during patrol season, and the council maintained more than 100 kilometres of cycle ways.
Local Government Week is also a perfect chance for you to show the council how active you are by taking part in the council's photo competition.
Follow the Lake Macquarie City Facebook page and upload a photo of your happiest moment in Lake Macquarie using #activeallareas and #lgweek2015 to win.
