The annual prize was established in 2001 to encourage and support emerging artists in the region.
Private sponsors and fundraisers have continued to contribute to the prize pool after Newcastle council withdrew financial support of the major prize in 2012.
This year the overall winner will receive $2000, with section prizes for painting ($1000), works on paper ($1000), sculpture ($1000), photo media ($1000), textile ($1000) and people's choice ($200 gift voucher).
The pieces will be judged by Braddon Snape, artist and founding member of Newcastle Art Space; Anne McLaughlin, education and arts curator at Maitland Regional Art Gallery; and Newcastle Art Gallery curator Sarah Johnson.
They will look at all entries then choose the works to be exhibited. From those works, they will then award section winners and overall winner.
Last year artist John Moroney won the painting section of the Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize, while photographer Michael Randall won the overall prize.
