He took up the hobby about 5½ years ago and rediscovered the art during his radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment.
This photo, titled Hand fishing, was taken next to the Squid's Ink at Belmont in July at sunset.
Mr Gilbert entered the photo in this year's Macular Disease Foundation Australia mEYE World Photographic Competition, which has the theme "See My World".
The competition is designed to remind people to value their vision and the importance of having an eye test and macula check to protect it.
"I saw the competition on Facebook and thought I'd try my luck," Gilbert said.
He said that, although the fisherman in photo was in his view, it struck him the subject was seeing something that Mr Gilbert could not.
It reminded him that our own point of view would always be just that - and that everyone saw the world differently.
The Macular Disease Foundation Australia is still calling for entries.
Entries will be judged by foundation patron Ita Buttrose, international photographer Rex Dupain and news photographer Alan Pryke. More than $13,000 of prizes are on offer.
