The centre should be turned into a cafe or kiosk, according to Labor councillors, who put forward a motion last Tuesday night in support of its adaptive reuse.
Councillor Declan Clausen said the building had been vacant for more than 12 months.
Labor councillors also called on the council to apply for grants for new outdoor equipment in Lambton Park.
However, council staff pointed out councillor Andrea Rufo started the process to find a new tenant for the building in July, which other councillors were informed about via an internal memo that same month.
Council staff have also already carried out a site meeting to source the best location and submitted an application for a $45,000 grant to help pay for new equipment through the state government's Community Building Partnership program.
Successful grant applicants are expected to be informed in early 2016.
The council has put aside $550,000 in this financial year's budget to upgrade the park, with plans to demolish and upgrade the toilets, replace damaged equipment, and repaint the rotunda.
